Free Amazon Kindles?

Coming soon, maybe. Interesting story here. Don’t know if I’d carry an iPad and a Kindle since the app is available on iOS but might be useful to read a book in bed at night while the iPad is charging. Easy to do since Amazon allows you to sync your bookmark across devices.

Facebook Secure Browsing

It took a little while but Facebook has, finally, enabled secure browsing for your entire session not just your login. Everyone should do this. Go to Account in the top right corner and select Account Settings. In the next screen 3rd item from the bottom is Account Security. Click Change on the right and you should see something like the attached picture. Select Secure Browsing (https) and don’t forget to click Save.

Facebook Secure Browsing Setting

Everyone should have this setting enabled.

Find My iPhone Icon

If you have a new iOS device, or have had one for a while, there is one thing you should do before buying Angry Birds or anything else. With the update to iOS 4, Apple has made their Find My iPhone service free for everyone. Don’t let the name fool you it works on any iOS device. Having known people who have lost or had their phone stolen I can say that you don’t want to have to replace yours at full price.

Before you rush off to install it, a couple of important points. The location is more accurate on an iPhone or iPad with 3G than a device with just wifi, but wifi still works. The service also allows you to send a message to the phone, set off an alarm, lock the device (if you have a password installed) and even wipe all the data. You can access the service from any iOS device which has the program installed or any computer with web access.

To download the app from the app store go here.

Once you have it on your device, Apple has an excellent walk through on setting up all the parts which you can find here.

Don’ wait, you don’t want to be wishing you had installed it!

Print From Your iPhone/iPad

The feature, as released by Apple, only works with specific printers equipped to do so without a computer involved. During the beta testing iOS 4.2.1 allowed you to print via a computer on your wireless network that was hooked up to a printer. It didn’t make it into the final release but my bet is that it will be in a future one.
Fortunately for us though the underlying ability is still there and only needs to be ‘activated.’ When I first explored doing this it involved a little bit of work under the hood with terminal, unix, etc… That has quickly been made unnecessary by the release of two programs for Mac OS and one for Windows.
